Weird Nativity

On Monday 2 December the Beavers and Cubs of Caterham District gathered at St John’s Church in Caterham for a ‘weird nativity’ service, different from the historical Christingle services of the past.
And they weren’t disappointed! Some of the leaders dressed up in a variety of disguises, which were then voted by the children as to which nativity characters they assumed, for the narration of the Christmas story.
There was Elvis Presley as Mary, the Mad Hatter as Joseph, Red Riding Hood became the guiding star, Danger Mouse had a dual role as the Angel Gabriel and Herod, the Three Kings comprised a dinosaur, Elsa (from Frozen) and a giant Christingle Orange, and a selection of Cubs volunteered as shepherds and sheep. It was wacky and fun and the Beavers and Cubs were very interactive throughout, vociferously voting for which character played each role.
Away In A Manger, Little Donkey and We Wish You A Merry Christmas were sung with gusto and everyone had an amazing time.
Sadly, no photography was allowed. Whether this was to spare the blushes of the dressed-up leaders or to try to stem the tide of production companies
who, without question, would have signed us up for pantomime season, we’ll never know.
It was lovely to see such a good attendance, supported by many Beaver/Cub parents and siblings. This Christmas service, I’m sure, will be remembered for a long time.
