Chaldon Cubs set off for Cub Camp at Paccar Scout Campsite

Date: 2nd May 2023 Author: Susan Dobson

Penny, Tim and Maisie met the Cubs at Whyteleafe Station to catch the train to London Bridge. We then swapped to the London Underground to Marylebone, which was two tube train rides away, and then one last train to Gerrards Cross. It’s amazing how fourteen young people in high-viz jackets clear the way in busy train stations, let alone train carriages!  This was followed by a hike into camp!

Our kit had arrived earlier in the day with Joe, Martin and Alex. They had the party tent up, kettle on and all that was left was for the Cubs to put their tents up!

Tents all up, dinner time arrived, and beds were assembled. Hot chocolate and biscuits before bed and the first day was over!

Monday, our first full day, the Cubs were split into three teams, Foxes, Badgers and Hedgehogs. Each team had to complete different camp chores throughout the day, including setting up for dinner, refilling the water or doing the recycling. Activities included playing team games, and stretch and peg. The Cubs had free time in the woods and the sun shone so warmly it was t-shirts with suncream weather! Our lunch was jacket potatoes cooked on the fire, which was a real treat.

Tuesday we did onsite activities, which included a Rabbit run (tunnels) and night line. The Cubs did not stop playing in the sunshine. Tuesday after our BBQ dinner we had campfire songs around the fire, followed by a wide game in the dark! Hedgehogs were the winning team for this year’s camp.

Wednesday morning all the Cubs had to be woken up for a 7 am start as we had to strike camp to get the van loaded before we hiked back to the train station! We visited the camp shop before we left and got back to Gerrards Cross for our intended train. Two tubes later we were back at London Bridge waiting for our final train back to Whyteleafe. We all arrived back at Whyteleafe as planned at 16.47 where parents were waiting.

All the Cubs were very well behaved on both journeys, during camp and were so busy that I have been told some forgot to change some ‘essential’  items of clothing some days or all days! A good time was had by all and Cub Camp 2024 is booked!

Thanks to Alex who came to help set up and Gwen and Peter for being our In-Touch contacts.
