Following a short pause in our activities for half term, 1st Woldingham Scout Group were back in action towards the end of February with a focus on developing their navigation skills, and our colony of Beavers has been working towards earning the Navigator Badge! They have been learning the four cardinal points of a compass through the use of mnemonics, for example ‘Naughty Elephants Squirt Water!’ or how about this sensible piece of advice? … ‘Never Eat Slimy Worms!’ They have not only been learning to locate themselves on maps while identifying a number of features and locations, but have also been drawing their own maps of their local area.

Congratulations to all of the Beavers for earning your Stage 1 badges!

While the Beavers were tucked away in the warmth of the Scout hut, the Cubs and Scouts braved the chilly February temperatures to practise and expand on their own navigation skills with compasses and OS maps in hand. As you may remember, last year 1st Woldingham Scouts worked incredibly hard to establish the Woldingham Parish Boundary Path to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and lately have been working hard to maintain it!

Since our Cubs and Scouts love the opportunity to stay active in the fresh air of our local countryside, they gathered up with gusto their gloves and secateurs and set off to clear winter debris and chop away encroaching brambles from the path. If you haven’t already explored this path, we encourage you to dust off your walking boots and give it a go, as it is a fantastic walking route. And don’t worry – if you do get lost you can always shout for a Scout – their navigation skills are now mighty impressive!
